
WHO
The World Health Organization or the WHO is a specialized organ of the United Nations and was established on 7 April 1948 and is the coordinating authority in Public Health. Comprising of 192 member states, it is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland and has inherited the mandate and resources of The Health Organization which was an organ of the League of Nations. The WHO constitution states as the main objective of the organization as – “The attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health” The WHO’s main objective of establishment has been to battle disease outbreaks and to promote the general level of health around the world. It has been deemed successful in its battle against SARS (Sever Acute Respiratory Syndrome), AIDS (Acute Immuno-Deficiency Syndromes), deteriorating level of child health in Africa, countering water borne diseases in the Amazon and has been at the forefront of eradicating polio and other such diseases from the developing and least developed states. The World Health Organization is funded by many donor nations and has formed alliances with many pharmaceutical companies and NGOs like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as well as the Rockefeller Foundation.
